Upcycled Plastic Quilting Workshop
Upcycle your plastic waste into a modern piece of quilted artwork, in partnership with Another Way Sustainable Film Festival at Cinema Akil. This workshop is designed to pair with viewings of by the short films “La Plastikeria” and “White Waves” later in the day.
We encourage you to bring in your own packaging to upcycle: Heavy plastic bags are easiest to work with but packaging from grocery items like pasta, nuts and crisps can often be used as well – be on the lookout for fun, colorful packaging to intercept on its way to the bin. We will also have a selection of material we’ve collected to choose from if need be.
After tracing and cutting out the components of a quilting pattern, we will appliqué layers together using a “blanket stitch” technique to complete the quilting block.
By realigning the perceived value of the plastic with it’s prolonged lifespan through labour-intensive craftsmanship – perhaps we can switch mentalities: treating plastic as a resource which is too expensive (for our environment) to waste.
Recommended for adults and children ages 12 and up.
